Make sure to stay active in the home building process to ensure you end up with YOUR dream home. We would like to help you with this goal so you don’t look back and wish you had known more about the process before you got started. Here are 5 things you need to know before building your home:
Know Your Numbers
Before you even start the home building process it is critical that you know if your dream home is something you can afford to build. This is a good time to determine what house plan fits your budget and what finishes are affordable for you. Something to keep in mind, there may be extra costs that come up that you weren’t planning for. It can be something as small as the counter tops you originally picked out don’t look as good with the cabinets as you thought and the counter tops that do match cost a little more. While creating your budget add in extra costs so you are prepared for the little things that may come up. Choosing the Right Builder
Picking the right builder is a very important part of the construction process! Make sure to do your research and find a builder with a good reputation and interview them. A Lot of your time will be spent with this person, they’ll be making big decisions and building your dream home, so it’s important to make sure they’re a good fit for the job.
Build With Resale In Mind
No matter how much you love the house that you are building, it’s unlikely that it will be the last home you are going to live in. Knowing that, you should be mindful of its potential resale value. Don’t add so many upgrades that you overprice your home for the neighborhood. Ask yourself if the features you’re considering installing are likely going to appeal to others. With that said, you still want to make it yours and add your own finishing touches on it!
Expect It To Take Longer Than You Expected
There will be an estimated timeline on when your house will be finished but keep in mind it is only an estimate and delays do happen. Different parts of the project depend on others, not just your builder. If the foundation doesn’t get completed on time, then the next phase of the home may not be completed on time either. Weather can also impact when your house is completed. Be prepared and expect it to take longer than expected. Be flexible with the finish date of the home and don’t get too upset when things don’t go exactly as planned.
